Tacoma Call-2-Haul vs. Hiring a Junk Removal Crew: Which Is Better for Your Cleanout?

Tacoma Call-2-Haul vs. Hiring a Junk Removal Crew: Which Is Better for Your Cleanout?

If you have bulky items to get rid of in Tacoma, the City’s Call-2-Haul program may be a good fit. Eligible residential customers get two pickups or self-haul appointments per year at no extra charge beyond their residential rates.

But it isn’t a full-service cleanout. You need to check what the City accepts, schedule the pickup, and place the items in the required location. If you need heavy lifting, inside removal, construction debris hauled away, or a whole property cleared, hiring a junk removal crew may make more sense.

Here’s how to choose between Call-2-Haul and junk removal in Tacoma, WA.

What does Tacoma Call-2-Haul include?

Call-2-Haul is a City of Tacoma Solid Waste service for eligible residential customers. To qualify for the two included services, your name must be on the utility bill and you must be billed for Tacoma garbage, recycling, or yard-waste service. Residents of larger apartment buildings and condominiums should check the City’s multifamily rules; the two included residential services don’t apply to every Tacoma address.

For each residential service, the City allows up to three large items and 15 boxes or bags of smaller items. Accepted large items can include furniture, mattresses, appliances, some yard equipment, and certain hot tubs. Small boxes or bags must be light enough for one person to lift.

You must tell the City what you’re putting out when you book. Items that weren’t disclosed or don’t meet the rules may be left behind. The City also says a load over the per-pickup limit may count as a double pickup, using both of your annual services.

Call 253-573-2468 to schedule. Active customers may also start a curbside pickup through MyTPU. The City asks customers to set items at the front curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day, clear of vehicles and other obstructions. Appointments can fill up in busy seasons, so plan ahead.

Check the City of Tacoma’s Call-2-Haul rules and accepted items before you schedule. Requirements can vary by item. For example, the City’s current guidance says hot tubs for six or more people must be cut into four separate pieces.

What Call-2-Haul doesn’t cover

Call-2-Haul is for eligible household items, not every kind of junk or debris. The City excludes household garbage, recycling, yard waste, hazardous waste, and construction materials such as drywall, insulation, lumber, roofing, and concrete items. Televisions, computers, and monitors are also among the items the City does not accept.

The service is curbside, so you’re responsible for getting items to the designated pickup spot. It doesn’t include a crew carrying furniture down basement stairs or removing a heavy item from a tight room. The City may also require preparation for certain items. For equipment, that can mean removing batteries, gasoline, oil, or other fluids before collection.

One more important detail: Call-2-Haul is a City of Tacoma program, not a Pierce County-wide service. If you live in unincorporated Pierce County, you generally won’t qualify for Tacoma’s residential pickups. Check Pierce County’s garbage and recycling information to find the provider or disposal options for your address.

When should you hire a junk removal crew?

A local junk removal crew is worth considering when the work involves more than placing a few eligible items at the curb. We can remove items from inside a home, garage, rental, or job site, subject to the material and access. You point out what should go; we handle the lifting and hauling.

Hiring a crew may be a better fit if you:

  • Have heavy items or stairs to manage. A crew can carry bulky furniture and appliances out of rooms and down stairs, rather than asking you to move them to the curb.
  • Have a full garage, home, or estate to clear. A property cleanout can involve far more than a few large items and bags. A crew can review the whole load and give you a price before work begins.
  • Need construction debris removed. Call-2-Haul excludes construction materials. Ask a hauling company what types and quantities of debris it can take.
  • Have a tight timeline. If you’re preparing for a move, rental turnover, or home sale, contact a crew to check the soonest available time. Availability varies, so ask before you count on a particular date.
  • Have a hot tub or an awkward item. The City does accept some hot tubs, but preparation rules apply. A crew may be more practical if cutting, access, or carrying the pieces is the hard part. Confirm the scope and price before booking.

How pricing differs

For an eligible Tacoma residential customer, the two Call-2-Haul services are included in residential rates. That can make the City program the lowest-cost option for a small, accepted load, as long as you can meet the set-out and scheduling requirements.

A private junk removal crew charges for the hauling service. The price depends on what you’re removing, how much space it takes in the truck, the work involved, and access to the items. Before booking, ask what’s included and whether the price is confirmed before loading starts.

With haulmycrap.com’s Tacoma junk removal service, we look at the load, explain the price before work starts, and let you decide. You don’t have to commit before you know the cost.

What to expect from a junk hauling appointment

The process should be straightforward:

  1. Tell us what needs to go. Call or request a quote, and describe the items, where they are, and any access issues such as stairs or a narrow doorway.
  2. Review the price before work starts. We assess the load and confirm the price before loading anything.
  3. Let the crew do the lifting. If you approve, we carry and load the agreed items.
  4. Get the space swept. After hauling, we sweep the cleared area and sort reusable items for donation or recycling when possible.

A quick way to decide

Choose Call-2-Haul if you’re an eligible Tacoma residential customer with a modest load of accepted household items, can move them to the curb, and can work with the City’s appointment schedule.

Choose a junk removal crew if you need inside lifting, have a larger cleanout, are dealing with construction debris, or want help with stairs and awkward access. A crew can also be useful when your move-out or sale date leaves little room to handle the hauling yourself.

If you’re unsure about a particular item, check the City’s Call-2-Haul guidance or call them before setting it out. For junk hauling in Tacoma or elsewhere in Pierce County, ask us to confirm service coverage and availability for your address.
